After much buzz about ill-effects of sleep deprivation, finally this news can bring smile on some faces!

A research study conducted at Colorado’s Sleep and Chronobiology Laboratory stated that if a person loses one night’s sleep, he/she burns 135 calories.

So, if you are not able to sleep properly, you have at least one reason to be happy…you will lose weight. However, it does not mean that you should reduce weight by depriving your night’s rest. The study only aims to emphasize that more energy is stored when we sleep. It, not at all, recommends sleep deprivation as a way to put off weight.

If you really want to stay fit, sound sleep coupled with a healthy routine is the best way. So, adopt the right way and enjoy your life.

July 07, 2010

A new research found that having depression may nearly double the risk of developing dementia later in life. Researchers know that two conditions often co-exist but there is no surety about which actually leads to the other.

Now two researchers published in the American journal Neurology that suggests depression does mean dementia is more likely, although they do not show why.

The researchers still not found direct cause; they said that more studies are required to find out the proper reason and why the two conditions are linked. Researchers believe that person’s lifestyle brain chemistry and other social time may play a major role.

Dr. Jane Saczynski of the University of Massachusetts, who led the first of the two studies, said: “While it’s unclear if depression causes dementia, there are a number of ways depression might impact the risk of dementia.

Inflammation of brain tissue that occurs when a person is depressed might contribute to dementia. Certain proteins found in the brain that increase with depression may also increase the risk of developing dementia.”

In the study, in which around 949 elderly people involved for 17 years, showed that dementia more often followed a bout of depression. By the end of the study, 164 of the people had developed dementia. In which 22 percent of those who had the depression. In the second study, 1239 US people involved and looked at several times a person experienced depression related to their risk of dementia.

Having two or more episodes of depression nearly doubled the risk of dementia.

“Similarities in symptoms between dementia and depression can mean the two are sometimes confused at time of diagnosis, but we don’t know if they are biologically linked” Rebecca Wood, chief executive of the Alzheimer’s Research Trust, said. “These latest studies suggest that there may be profound connections between dementia and depression so we must expand the research to find out more”.

“It is well known depression is common in early stages of dementia. What this study demonstrates is that depression at a younger age is probably a significant risk factor for dementia,” he said.

18/6/2010, India

As per the stunning revelations of a new research, the smokeless tobacco is of great harm not only for the mouth but it can have an adverse effect on the key family of enzymes that are found in each and every organ of the human body.

The enzymes are very essential for the generation of the hormones. These also include the hormones pertaining to sex called the estrogen and the testosterone. The enzymes also play a key role in the production of the cholesterol and vitamin D. these also help the body to get a protection cover against the prescription drugs and the substances that are potentially toxic.

The research has further clarified that the smokeless tobacco can destroy the genetic material that is in the liver, the kidney and the lungs. It was further clarified by a researcher Krishan Khanduja that there are further lethal impacts of the smokeless tobacco that also include the gum disease and oral cancer.

How smokeless tobacco works-

The smokeless tobacco consists of the potential carcinogens ad other chemicals. When you keep this form of tobacco in the mouth, it is absorbed in the blood and thus travels throughout the body. However, so far the scientists don not have the exact clue of the impact of the smokeless tobacco on the other parts of the body.

Generally the smokeless tobacco is consumed in North Africa, south East Asia and the Mediterranean region.

The proposed drink drive limit will be reduced to a half. If the proposed limit is decreases, it will save as many as 150 lives in a single year. This will happen if you reduce the alcohol content from 80 mg to 50 mg per 100 ml of blood.

It is not however, certain that this law will be implemented by the new government. If implemented, it will be considered one of the strictest rules enforced in the UK among all the states of the European Union. This will put UK in tune with the rest of the UN.

However, this rule will allow the citizens residing in the UK to have at least one glass of drink before they drive. However, the weight of the individual and the factor of metabolism also play a key rule in this. The capacity to bear can vary from individual to individual.

The police have come out with a different solution in this regard. The police simply believe that any amount of alcohol can affect the driving. So it is the individual capacity that plays a major role here. The police have other alternatives in mind. It becomes mandatory, according to the police, to have a designated driver.

The police further says that the this procedure needs to be followed otherwise the person may lose his license within a span of 12 months. Apart from this, the person can also lose his job.

On Thursday India unveiled its first indigenously developed vaccine against the dreaded swine flu which claimed more than 1,000 lives in the country and over 18,000 globally. Earlier the vaccine was imported from French company, Sanofi Pasteurs that too only for health workers and other high-risk people. The vaccine was manufactured and produced by Zydus Cadilla.

Union Health Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad launched the vaccine on Thursday. Four companies have got the mandate for developing the vaccine. These are Panacea Biotech (Hyderabad), Bharat Biotech (Delhi), Cadila Healthcare (Ahmedabad), and Serum Institute (Pune). With three companies the government has already paced his orders. By the month end Serum Institute is expected to produce the vaccine.

The vaccine produced by Serum Institute would be a nasal drop while the vaccine developed by Zydus Cadilla is injectable. Drug Controller General of India, Surinder Singh told reporters, “The nasal vaccine would be de-activated vaccine while the injectable one is an activated one”. Azad said he would write to the Chief Minister and health minister of all states to use the vaccine on their health workers as much as they can and further requested people to use the vaccine, which would be available at Rs 350 per dose from Friday onwards.

Chairman and Managing Director of Cadilla, Pankaj Patel, said, the vaccine has been clinically tested on 269 people. In the first batch it is estimated that around 4.5 lakh doses will be available in the market. Singh highlighted that the vaccine does not possess any serious side effects except for slight stomach upset, local pain and fever. The health minister asserted though the H1N1 virus is not dominant currently in the country, but there is a probability it might spurt in monsoon and winter seasons.

As per the repots of a leading NGO, the AIDS is one of the major problems of health that the state of Maharashtra has to conquer. AS per the statistics, the AIDS cases in the state of Maharashtra are on a high since the past three years. In the year 2007, around one lakh cases were registered in Maharashtra which is almost a quarter of the total cases of the cases in the nation.

The fact is that Maharashtra is among the Indian states where the trade of sex is on a high. As per the national organization of the control of AIDS, Maharashtra is on a high with 14 districts of the state among the 49 in India where the prevalence of the virus is extremely high.

As per the research that was conducted by the bill and Melinda gates foundation on this issue, the Aids virus is more prevalent among the employees of the hotels that are followed by the drivers and the employed. As per the revelations of this organization, it has been found that the truck drivers bought the virus to the villages of their birth.

The stunning revelation says that the disease is not confined only to the sex workers but has deeply penetrated into the general population. The disease has equally spread to the rural and urban areas of Maharashtra. Latur, jalgaon, sangli and chandrapur are on a high alert.
